Story
A stool that hangs on your wall in case you have an unexpected plus one.
Made from standard ¾” plywood, can we elevate something conventional and celebrate something new?
In NYC, where both CANVAS and Nik Bentel Studio are located, domestic space is very limited and no one is interested in purchasing another thing to sit on. But everyone has at least once run out of seats whether it’s an unexpected plus one, impromptu kickback, or needing a little more height to reach the top shelf.
The aesthetics of The Emergency Stool is in case of an emergency, to provide an extra 18” tall seat that doesn't take up any extra floor space and can be assembled/disassembled in only a couple of seconds. The stool consists of only four pieces and takes only three quick steps.
This stool takes the idea of an extra seat and transforms it into a piece of art. The dimensions for a typical art poster hung up in a home are 24” x 36”. The thickness of the frame is ¾”, which is the typical thickness of standard plywood. Plywood is deemed an unfinished, cheap, undesirable material and we wanted to shift that perception. We left the frame coated in a natural stain finish to create a visual contrast to the vibrant red painted stool pieces.
The design takes a lot of inspiration from flat packed furniture, and we wanted to celebrate this style as a form of art.
The Emergency Stool is the first of many collaborations between CANVAS and Nik Bentel Studio, the second one is already in the works…
